Shed for our forklift

Update: Forklift purchased, shed needed

Thanks to the generous donations you have made, we now own a forklift. This enables us to unload and move the donated food efficiently, and has been a tremendous blessing. Now, with winter coming, we need to build a shed for the forklift.

This small shed will keep the forklift clean and secure. It will have a concrete pad, metal posts to secure the forklift, and a small heater to prevent problems with cold weather startups.

Including concrete, bollards, and everything needed, we expect this to cost the better part of $5,000. Should donations exceed our actual cost, the balance will go toward the operating expenses of the pantry. Please note that $5,430 in previous donations went toward the forklift purchase. Therefore, the current goal is $10,430.

Good News Food Pantry distributes more food than any other pantry in Missouri - 3 million pounds a year. Located in Jennings, adjacent to Ferguson, they serve a regional population of very poor, hungry people. Open 6 days a week, they feed hundreds of families a month, on a shoestring budget.

In the early days, pantry volunteers brought food back in personal vehicles. A local news story  featured the pantry five years ago. But the need, and the quantity of food available to them, far exceeded the capacity of personal vehicles.

Today, most of that 3 million pounds of food comes to the pantry in an old box truck. They collect food from area grocery stores, and pick up loads of surplus perishables from the regional food bank. On a typical day, they bring two to six loads of food back for distribution.

The hydraulic part of the truck's liftgate is barely limping along. And recently, scrap metal thieves actually stole half the liftgate, so it is no longer wide enough to hold a pallet. A used forklift will eliminate the need for the liftgate, and also greatly help with other pantry operations. They  have borrowed one on a few occasions recently, and it made an incredible difference in the efficiency of operations - and in the condition of volunteers' backs and arms at the end of the day.

Additional information about the pantry can be found on their website. Those who prefer to donate by check can send mail to Good News Food Pantry, 8850 Jennings Station Road, St. Louis, MO 63136.
