Google workers fired for unionizing

8/23/2023 update: We've sent out the first round of $$$ to the Aug 7 laid off folks. Now we want to collect funds for the 2nd and 3rd wave of layoffs (Oct 6 and Nov 11).

Note: Any unused funds will be evenly distributed to all those signed up throughout the campaign.

Our fight for fair pay, benefits and PTO has been long and exhausting, full of false or forgotten promises. Less than one month after we made the decision to file for our union with the NLRB, we received news that 80 of our nearly 120 coworkers would be laid off. We exercised our right to organize as members of the Alphabet Workers Union-CWA to bring both Google and Accenture, a Google subcontractor, to the bargaining table to negotiate on several key demands including layoff protections.

Despite the vast resources available to two of the most profitable corporations on the planet, we are confident in our ability to prove that these terminations constitute an Unfair Labor Practice (ULP). Even if we're successful though, dozens of us will be functionally unemployed for weeks or months while we wait on a ruling.

It is absolutely unacceptable that Google and Accenture should choose to lay off workers in the midst of an active union campaign with overwhelming support from workers. Similarly to the failed attempt to fire Google Raters for speaking out about their working conditions, these Google Help layoffs are just another attempt to discourage workers across Alphabet from exercising our right to organize. Unfortunately for Alphabet, this decision just further underscores the fact that the greatest accountability mechanism available to workers is a strong union contract. We look forward to taking every recourse possible to support our impacted members and continue to organize workers at Google Help and beyond.
