Master Sergeant Gordon Storey knows firsthand how difficult the transition from civilian to military life can be. He joined the Air Force in 1986 and felt isolated when he moved away from his family. Years later, he saw other airmen struggling and launched a volunteer program on Dyess Air Force Base so men and women on duty could engage with and support the local community of Abilene, Texas. More than two decades later, Storey and his nonprofit, the Dyess We Care Team – with the help of nearly 15,000 volunteers -- have completed hundreds of projects for the elderly and others in need. The group has logged almost 100,000 hours fixing up homes in an effort that is a win-win for residents and the airmen.

-------------

The Dyess We Care Team is a dedicated group of active-duty service members stationed at Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, Texas, who share a common goal: making a positive impact on our local community. Formed by passionate airmen, our mission is to give back through volunteer work and community service projects that help individuals, families, and organizations in need. We believe in the strength of unity, compassion, and selflessness, which are values deeply ingrained in our military service.

Our projects range from assisting or local elderly and disabled by painting homes, to organizing donation drives and fundraising events like our annual Operation Special Santa Carwash, which raises money for adults with physical and mental disabilities. Each project is chosen to uplift those who might otherwise fall through the cracks, providing tangible support and spreading goodwill.

What sets us apart is our commitment to going beyond the call of duty. Every project we take on is a labor of love, done in our off-duty hours, with a focus on strengthening our community one act of kindness at a time. Whether it's helping a local family rebuild after a disaster or providing holiday gifts to those in need, we are here to serve with pride and dedication.

With the recent transition of leadership within our team, we are more driven than ever to make a difference. Your support, whether it’s through a donation or simply spreading the word, directly impacts the lives of those we serve. Together, we can continue to make Dyess and the Abilene area a better place for all.
