Gracey’s Continued Cancer Battle

Gracey Marek was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in her right shoulder last October. She spent the majority of her senior year in the hospital undergoing multiple surgeries and chemotherapy. In June, Gracey celebrated her 18th birthday, graduated from Napa High School, finished chemotherapy treatment and rang the bell celebrating the end of her battle with cancer. Sadly, after receiving the results of Gracey's post chemotherapy scans they found that her cancer had spread extensively throughout her body.

 The Marek family, being left with no other choices, began to research experimental trials. After consulting with Gracey’s doctors, the Marek family feels the most confidence in the cancer treatment program at MD Anderson Hospital located in Houston, Texas. Gracey will travel to Texas in early August to begin treatment as soon as possible.

 As Gracey’s best friend, I have seen the positive impact the love and support of our community has had on the Marek family during the challenges of the past nine months. They were incredibly grateful for the financial support raised by the GoFundMe set up by Ali Poseley to help with Gracey’s first cancer treatment. Entering a clinical cancer trial brings a daunting new list of uncertainties for the Mareks including out-of-pocket costs that will not be covered by medical insurance.

 Gracey is the strongest person I know, she is truly my biggest inspiration. While going through the hardest time of her life she has maintained a positive attitude and I have never heard her complain once. Her selflessness is unmatched as she is more worried about how her friends and family are than herself throughout her treatment.
