Graham West-Mobile Tree Trail Eagle Scout Project

Hi, I’m Graham West. I have been in Scouting for 11 years, starting as a Tiger Cub, and I am happy to be working towards the rank of Eagle Scout. I crossed over from Pack 227 to Troop 227 in 2016 and became a member of the Order of the Arrow in 2019, now having served on the Lodge Executive Committee for three consecutive years. Scouting has been a huge part of my life and a wonderful experience overall. My project for the rank of Eagle will be to help revive the Mobile Tree Trail in Mobile, Alabama.

The Mobile Tree Trail was created by the Mobile Tree Commission circa 1980 to recognize and preserve interesting and historically valuable trees in the Mobile area. The trees currently have signs, but they are small, hard to see, and often dilapidated due to age and sun damage. I plan to replace these signs with larger, more prominent and more informative markers to raise awareness and public interest in the trees. For news items on the trail itself, click here or here.

These new signs will have decorative metal poles that meet traffic code and cost about $700 each, and the signs themselves will be around $100 each. The trail has 15 signs in total, and I hope to replace at least half of them, which will cost around $6500. The Mobile Tree Commission has agreed to match $2000 for the project, so we will be able to install 8 signs if we can raise $4500 from the community.
