Generator for Gramps

Donation protected
Hi Everyone!

For the past 30 years, my grandpa Bill has been living off-the-grid on the Big Island of Hawaii. Spurred by the idealism of the 1950’s and 60’s, he participated in the Civil Rights Movement. Hoping to live the words he spoke, my Grandpa gave up his career as an English teacher to live a more natural life as a carpenter, cultivate his land, and to write his story. In line with his philosophy of self-sufficiency, he lives off of rain catchment, solar, propane and growing fruits and vegetables in his garden.  He built his house out of recycled and found materials, and spent his free time starting the first recycling center in his community.

Last year, he had a stroke and faced the possibility of going into a nursing home. Inspired by his passion for freedom, his community came together to help him recover.  However, living off the land is now more of a challenge. He no longer has the strength to keep up his gardens, get water from his rain catchments, and move around his property the way he once did.  My mom and I would love for my grandpa to continue living his life the way he wants, off his land. In order for that to happen, there are a number of improvements that have to be made for his health and safety.

The main things my grandpa needs are upgraded appliances. His propane stove is over 30 years old and leaking propane. His secondhand propane fridge is also leaking and the door is falling off which increases the risk of food spoilage. Bringing in new or used appliances would place a greater burden on the solar panels that are installed now. A powerful but quiet generator is necessary to both run more modern appliances and preserve the natural atmosphere of the property.

Your donations will go towards these appliances, a generator, and the cost of labor it would take to install them. Since his stroke, balance has been a challenge for my grandpa. We would like to put up railings and level steps around the property to make it easier to access the outhouse and kitchen. Any extra money would go to getting wifi on the property and a tablet so my mom and I will be able to contact my grandpa from our homes in Oakland and D.C.

Anything you can give will help! The money is going directly to my grandpa in Hawaii where my mom is currently trying to organize these big changes. If you live in the Hilo area and would like to donate gardening or landscaping services, please message me.

My grandpa's independence means the world to him and we are so greatful for any help you can give.

Thank you,
Asha
