73 yr old great grandmother survives 2 story fall
After 51 years of service as a nurse and a lifetime of service to her community,
Ms. Veola McCullough Williams is in need of your help. On the night of October 2, 2020, a house fire tore through her home. She and 6 family members narrowly escaped with their lives after being awakened by the sound of windows shattering and blazing fire. By the time they awoke, the fire had overtaken the first floor. With moments to spare, the only way to survive was to jump from a second floor window. One after the other, each family member jumped from the second floor window to save their life. Multiple members sustained serious injuries which include broken bones, and deep lacerations. Even in the face of possible death, the 73 year old retired nurse and grandmother continued her role as a caretaker. She refused to leave the home until ensuring her daughter and five grandchildren were out safely. After jumping from the second floor,
Ms. Williams suffered several fractures to her back and ankle. The jump also severed her lip requiring immediate reconstructive surgery.
Ms. Williams, a lifelong resident of Temple, Texas spent 51 years helping others as a nurse. She has lived in her home for more than 20 years. The fire resulted in a total loss. The home and all of the family’s personal belongings have been destroyed and were not insured.
Unfortunately, when her home insurance policy ended, the insurance provider deemed the property uninsurable due to the shingle siding. Being on a fixed income left no room in the budget to do the upgrades required for the home to be reinsured.
With winter coming, Miss Williams and family are without clothing or a place to stay. Your donation will help this family rebuild and would be greatly appreciated. The road to recovery for this family will be long and require multiple surgeries, rehabilitation, and access to trauma focused mental health care.
