Granny's Girls Birth Initiative
Donation protected
In honor of our Grand/Granny midwives who paved the way for birth communities today, Granny’s Birth Initiative seeks to provide support for disenfranchised birthing families. Our hope is that we can service any family who needs support around birth. However, our focus is incarcerated or homeless girls/women as well as those in foster care or transitioning out of any of these systems. Doula and breastfeeding support, birth education, legal support and other resources are the key tools in our fight to decrease maternal and infant mortality in Black and other marginalized communities.
We are looking for a space to create a Maternity store for community organizations supporting pregnant women/ birthing families. At this Maternity store, referred families in need will be granted permission to pick 10 clothing items for themselves and 10 clothing items for their babies. They will have access to the store even up to 6 month of leaving/ graduating their support program! A good reference is the shop featured in Episode 9 of the hit show MAID on Netflix. We would also want to have a mobile version to drive to prisons where mothers/ fathers can pick items, create a card, and send to their babies.
We want to set up a program in which we provide pumps so that these women can express their breast milk and we deliver the milk to the baby. We want all babies to have all they need to have a healthy start to life. However it cost $80 to register a non profit to KY and $650 to file for a 501c3, and a PO Box $30/ month. We are setting our goal to $5000 to cover the initial fees to start a non profit as well as the fees to utilize go fund me. We are working with policy strategist team of ACLU Louisville, KY to advocate for both breastfeeding and birth rights for all! Please visit our FaceBook page to learn more about our mission and how we plan to assist our birth community.
