Grant's Arctic Dreams Semester

Donation protected
My name is Grant Hawkes, and I am a junior in high school. I have been accepted to join a 5 month long expedition along with 13 other students that will run January through June of 2017. This program is offered through Kroka Expeditions, a farm based wilderness expeditions school in southern New Hampshire.

Ever since I was a child I have been fascinated with the outoors and traditional skills.  These fascinations have become a deeply rooted passion of mine, and over the years, I I have continued to develop those talents through summer camps, apprenticships, and teaching skills to others.  Through working with knowledgable mentors, I have come to realize the importance of passing on wisdom, and this expedition will allow me to  develop a deep connection with the natural world and through me the knowledge will reach many others.

The expedition will start in January with a few weeks of training our bodies and preparing gear and food for the first half of our semester. Once we are ready, we will spend the next month and a half backcountry skiing in Vermont, the Chic Choc Mtns in Quebec, and the Uapishke Mtns in Northern Quebec.

From there as the winter begins to weaken and snow thaws, we will travel to Maine where we will spend two weeks recooperating from our winter travels and work on tradition crafting skills. We will then begin our spring leg of the expedition, involving whitewater coneoing, rowing the length of Lake Champlain, and bicylcing  as we journey from Northern Vermont back to the Kroka Base camp in Southern New Hampshire.  There we will finish the semester as we enjoy the life at basecamp and work on the farm.

I have dreamed of participating in this expeditions since I first heard of it as a young boy.  To fund this experience I have been working hard, guiding wilderness expeditions, carving, and blacksmithing, but despite this I do not have enough funds. As a thank you for your generous donations,  I am making handcarved wooden spoons and small  handcrafted Scandinavian style knives.  As the starting date of the expedition comes ever nearer my gratitude and excitment grows even greater.  Any donation will be immensely appreciated!

With much gratitude,
Grant Hawkes
