For 10 years I\'ve been photographing and documenting early New England gravestones. Have a look at the resulting website at A Very Grave Matter, http://www.gravematter.com. These are some of the earliest works of art accomplished by New Englanders not to mention a lasting tribute to the lives of our forefathers. To date I\'ve photographed over 15,000 gravestones.
These places often lack attention by their governmental guardians and vandalized by people who don\'t care about protecting history. Photographing these gravestones is also in an effort to document them before they\'re destroyed in any manner and the resource is lost forever. Many cities and towns lack the funds or interest to document or conserve these cemeteries themselves.
This is entirely a volunteer effort. The camera I use is a 8 year old Sony Cybershot 5 megapixels with spots on the inside of the lens and a sticky shutter. A new camera plus backup batteries and extra flash cards would be great for my project.
