Gready Hunter - Donate to Help

Hello! My name is Don Wallin and I am fund raising for Gready Hunter and his family.

Gready has been in the hospital for over 6 weeks now and has had many ups and downs. Gready’s perseverance and love of life has kept him upbeat and positive throughout this terrible ordeal. Gready and his family need good thoughts, prayers and your support ! I hope you can give all 3 ! Mounting hospital bills are tremendous as well as the Hunter Family is still trying to rebuild from Harvey.

Gready is loved by everyone and truly needs assistance. If every friend gives a little, it will go a long way !

From his daughter, Cheyenne:

On the night of May 25th, my Dad, Gready Hunter, was rushed to the ER with an elevated heart rate and extreme difficulty breathing. He had to be shocked to get his heart back in rhythm, while fully awake. When we asked him how he felt afterwards, he said he felt "shockingly better." Typical Dad jokes. We hoped the nightmare was over, but it was just the beginning.

Two days after being moved to the ICU, he chose to be intubated so he could receive more assistance with his breathing and so the doctors could run more tests to get to the bottom of things. When they intubated him, his heart stopped, but they were able to bring him back. At the time, they were not sure if he would make it through the night, or through the tests they needed to run, but he proved them all wrong.

We were first told a heart attack was to blame, then pneumonia, then an infection. We were told all of his organs were failing. Every test imaginable was run to find an answer. Finally, one doctor suspected he may have a rare inflammatory syndrome, which was causing his multi-organ failure and sepsis. To receive treatment for HLH, he was life flighted to the Medical Center - checking off his bucket list dream of a helicopter ride (don't worry, we got videos to show him later).

On one of our hardest days, we were told tests were showing he had minimal brain function and may never wake up. On June 6th, several days after being taken off of sedation, my Dad opened his eyes. When we asked if he knew who we were, he was able to nod his head. Once again, he proved everyone wrong. Two weeks later, after a tracheostomy, he was able to mouth words to us. Now, he is able to speak over the trach and is constantly cracking jokes to all the doctors and nurses, inviting them all out for a beer. While he has struggled through his share of setbacks, his numbers are improving and he has started physical therapy to combat the atrophy from weeks in bed so he can start moving again.

He is still in critical condition in the ICU. We may never have all of the answers on how a relatively healthy man, who received a near-perfect physical two weeks before, got so sick so quickly. The past six weeks have been a devastating and exhausting time for my family, but we are so grateful for the team at Memorial Hermann who have been working tirelessly to solve this and to the many wonderful friends and family who love my Dad so much- he has been so moved and overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support. It has been the driving force in helping him through all he has overcome so far.

My Dad's life will not be the same after this. None of our lives will ever be the same. He will have to re-learn how to walk, and how to write, and a lot of other things. He may never play guitar again. We will likely have to build ramps and other accommodations in my parents' home while he recovers. But today I woke up and still have a Dad, and there are no words for the gratitude I feel. To paraphrase a wise and incredible nurse we have been so lucky to have taking care of him - "It's going to be a long road back, but we are so grateful to have the road."
