Great Torrington Mayfair & Carnival
Donation protected
Did you know costs are increasing to £20,000+ to stage the annual Mayfair and Carnival events in Great Torrington? And the full cost is raised by a committee of volunteers through fundraising and donations.
Sadly as a result of increasing costs and declining volunteers, there will be no Carnival event in 2023.
Help us secure these events for future years!
It is said that Mayfair dates back to at least 1220. In the late 1800s the first Thursday in May was set as Mayfair day.
Since the late 1930s the crowning of the May Queen has been the main feature of May Fair day. The costumes of the May Queen and her entourage have a theme - normally recognising a national event.

Crowds of thousands gather the streets to support Thursday's Mayfair and Saturday's carnival. If every person who attended Mayfair could contribute just £1 to support the events, it would go a long way to ensure we can keep this tradition alive for the future.
