Tigray a region in the northern part of Ethiopia with the population of approximately 15 million people. Tigray is mostly dry and rocky. Tigray people are hardworking, honest and humble people. Most are farmers and depend on the land to survive. In September 2020, right at the harvest time Tigray region had the worst locust invasion in 25 years that destroyed approximately 490,000 acres of agricultural land. In addition, COVID-19 has been spreading fast in region. To top it off, in November 2020, the prime Minister of Ethiopia Abiy Ahmed declared war on his people in Tigray region. The Ethiopian government cut all telecommunications and ordered airstrike on civilian infrastructure, destroyed the power grid and fresh water supply, and closed all banks.
More than a 100 thousand Tigrayans fled the region to escape the war and seeking refugee in the neighboring country Sudan, Pregnant women and children are travelling by foot to reach a safe place to survive. UN reported starting Nov. 2020, thousand of people arrived to Al Qadarif and Kassala, a town at the border of Sudan and Ethiopia. The United nation fears the spread of communicable diseases among the refugee and the general safety and wellbeing of the people in the refugee camps. UNHCR and volunteers are trying to provide basic fundamental needs to these people, but requires support from me and you to sustain that. They need my help, your help and every one's help.
With in Tigray More than 4.5 million Tigrayans need emergency humanitarian aid as famine has started and people are dying of starvation.
The Tigray community in Victoria have many family members in Tigray. We have protested for Peace, wrote letters to the international community to make pressure and push for ceasefire. The War continues and many innocent civilians are dying. Since there is no telephone or internet connection the Tigreans in Canada and abroad are worried about our families, we want to go find our family; find survivors, help the civilians affected by this war. We want to support the women/ mother who has lost a husband a father a son and a daughter on this War. We want to support the children who have lost a father and mother on this war. These people are feeling lost, displaced from their homes, affected by the trauma of War, starvation, and COVID 19.

Our Goal is to help the Tigray refugee in Sudan and the volunteers who are planning to devote their time and money to go to refugee camps in Sudan and support and give some hope to the people.
We have a non-profit organization “Greater Victoria Tigray refugee Society” and the money will be deposited in the non-profit account and dispersed to the refugees within Tigray and outside Tigray.
