Greenberg Blended Learning Program

I am, Gina Hubbard, the proud principal of the Joseph J. Greenberg Elementary School, which is celebrating 50 years of service to students in the Bustleton area of Northeast Philadelphia. Our school has a proud, long history of teaching all students to achieve at exceptional levels of academic success. When our students transition to high school, they attend high performing private and public schools. Our mission is to nurture the creativity, critical thinking, and empathy of all students so they can thrive in this new global environment in which we live today. The Neubauer Family Foundation of Philadelphia has offered our school a matching grant opportunity to ensure we fulfill our mission for all students. The Foundation will match our fundraising dollar for dollar up to $12, 500. so we can implement a Blended Learning model in our school.
Our goal is to strengthen the achievement of all students, including any that struggle to learn math and reading skills while guaranteeing challenging learning opportunities for more advanced students. For this reason, teachers are reforming their practice to establish Blended Learning models in their classrooms. Blended Learning is a model of learning that involves opportunities for students to use technology that create individual learning pathways based on their needs and readiness. At the same time, all learners use technology to explore topics more deeply within the framework of Inquiry-based learning and other independent and group learning opportunities. Blended Learning requires ample technology to implement successfully. Based on recent performance data, we are targeting grades 2, 3, and 4 for this program initially and later, grades K and 1. Successful program implementation begins with providing each classroom with twelve laptop computers. The funds will be used exclusively to purchase Chromebooks, which cost 300.00 each. With the funds raised through this effort, we can raise enough computers to support four classrooms since the Foundation will match donations dollar for dollar. Funds for the six additional classrooms and will be raised through other campaigns.
These funds are needed immediately. The matching grant opportunity ends March 31, 2016! No funds will be dispersed to schools after the March deadline. Our goal is to implement Blended Learning full time in September 2016, however, teachers will be engaging in professional development starting in June.
This project is vital for our school to secure a positive future of our students. All students need the skills, knowledge, and emotional mindset to be prepared for the 21st work environment. Subsequently, Blended Learning will allow them to recognize how they learn while helping them to develop their collaboration skills, both of which are needed for success in college and career. Another reason this project is important is its capacity to increase parents involvement in their children's growth. Parents will have access to relevant data about their children's progress, and more importantly, feel confident about the support they are receiving in school. Finally, this project is important because our students will ultimately benefit from the collected funds that will directly impact their growth and success.
The entire Greenberg community of students, parents, and teachers will be profoundly thankful for any and all contributions to this effort.
