3 Americans Missing in Greenland
Donation protected
Update! July 4th, 2016
We are heading to Greenland on July 15th to search for 3 American heroes who went missing when their plane crashed during a daring rescue. Tickets have been purchased and generous supporters have donated the use of radar and drilling equipment, but our transportation to the site has not been secured. Helicopters are the safest mode of transportation to the icecap, but we have had to choose this much lower cost mode of transportation and even that plan is in jeopardy. Funding that was pledged to help support the search and get us to the site has fallen through and now we may have to pull the plug on the whole mission. Time is very short…. please help us bring closure to these families by supporting our mission to find 3 American heroes. These men paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country…lets not leave them behind any longer.
This is the modern day search for 3 American heroes missing in southeast Greenland. In a year where the United States Coast Guard celebrates 100 years of aviation, our team is leading a reconnaissance mission to the arctic icecap. This goal is to find the only two unrecovered men in Coast Guard history alongside a hero from the United States Army that saved his downed B-17 crew from the grasp of the Greenland winter.
My name is John Bradley and I’m the founder of Global Exploration and Recovery. My fellow colleagues Dr. Jaana Gustafsson, Captain Francis Marley and Nicholas Bratton round out this specialized team.
We bring together experience from diverse fields that has bonded and formed who we are today. With highlights of the team’s resume of mountaineering, military contracting, geophysics and logistics, we look to bring these strengths to the challenge of finding these men.
In 1942 a cascading string of tragedies resulted in the loss of three planes and disappearance of the men we are seeking. After a B-17 crashed while searching for a missing cargo plane, Corporal Loren Howarth and his crew found themselves stranded on the Greenland icecap. Howarth’s persistence and ingenuity in repairing the plane’s broken radio were responsible for the eventual rescue of his fellow Americans, yet he remains entombed in the ice today.
A daring Coast Guard aircrew of pilot Lt. John Pritchard and Radioman Benjamin Bottoms made the daring rescue of 2 crewmen from the B-17 by landing their seaplane on the glacier and flying the injured men to safety. On their second trip they collected Howarth but a storm closed in and swallowed their plane.
We have the support of the missing men’s families and the United States Coast Guard to lead this mission. We have generous sponsorships from world-leading technology and equipment companies for our project. The only thing we lack is funding for our logistics.

As mountaineers we are taking an alpinist approach to this mission: go light, go fast, and bring the right tools for the job. We are doing this for the families and our goal is to bring these men home to be reunited with their loved ones and laid to rest on American soil with the honor they deserve.

GEaR tries to source as much of its equipment as we can from U.S. manufacturers. This extends to our choice in hats. Our ball caps are rugged enough for use in Greenland. We will order enough hats at the end of the campaign to ensure we have plenty to go around.
GEaR tries to source as much of its equipment as we can from U.S. manufacturers. This extends to our high-quality cotton logo T-shirts. We'll order a batch of these after the campaign ends to make sure we have enough for everybody who wants one. Available in both men and women's heather black color.
