Honoring the Life and Legacy of Gregg Downey

Gregg Steven Downey, 63, passed away on November 18, 2024, in Mesa, Arizona, following a sudden and unexpected brain aneurysm. Born on May 25, 1961, in Seattle, Washington, to Jim and Joanne Downey, Gregg grew up in Beaverton, Oregon, before moving with his family to Lenoir, North Carolina, where he discovered his passion for golf at Cedar Rock Country Club.

A 1979 graduate of Sunset High School, Gregg earned a golf scholarship to Portland State University, where he graduated with a degree in Business Administration. He was a two-time All-American in 1985 and 1986, the captain of the PSU Golf Team, and an accomplished golfer who won numerous tournaments throughout his career.

In 2011, Gregg channeled his love for the game into founding Cause & Effect Golf in Scottsdale, Arizona. Through his teaching and coaching, he inspired golfers of all skill levels to find joy and success in the sport he loved so deeply. Known for his generous spirit, entrepreneurial drive, and zest for life, Gregg left a lasting impact on everyone he met.

Gregg is survived by his son, Logan Downey; stepdaughter, Miranda Derheim; brothers, Chris, Brett, and Brad Downey; and his beloved grandchildren, Declan, Dylan and Jordan Derheim.

Gregg passed peacefully surrounded by his family. They have found solace in his final act of selflessness as an organ donor, saving the lives of two Arizona women. His legacy of generosity and love will forever be remembered by his family, friends, and the golf community.
