Gregg Unruh's Story- daughters asking for help

Donation protected

Hi Everyone. My name is Kristin Unruh, the daughter of Gregg Unruh. My sister, Lauren, and I are creating this go fund me to tell my father's story and try and help him and us in this desperate time of need. We want to start off by mentioning that we are not one to ask for help financially. My dad would even be very angry for even posting this but we are in a desperate situation handling everything alone and we have exhausted all of our options and energy.

If you are seeing this, you may know Gregg Unruh, my dad. He is a hardworking, extroverted, goofy guy with a personality of level 10. If you have ever been in his presence, no doubt you chuckled a time or two or just felt carefree. My dad, unfortunately, had a massive stroke this past week. He was in bed for 6 days without help until my sister, and I did a wellness check. My sister found him in bad shape. Many people, including doctors, are surprised he is alive, and we are blessed he is. I spent 8 hours with him in the ER, running tests and waiting to be admitted Friday night. Since finding him, our time and energy has been spent back and forth from the hospital, meeting with doctors and social workers, to his place to clean and figuring out financial responsibilities.

He will be at Piedmont hospital until he is released to be admitted into a rehab facility which is covered by his medicare.

He has lost his speech and has cognitive delays. The right side of his body is affected, and it will be years of long recovery. He has not been with his job long enough to qualify for any paid leave. He has countless bills to pay as well as the medical bills that are to come. My sister is working part-time as a therapist and part-time as a nanny studying to get her LMSW at 27 years young. I am a Special Education teacher going back to school for my Specialist, so between the two of us, we are unable to help out with his financial struggles and any finances that come with caring for him and all the struggles to come with his recovery and living expenses. This has already and will continue to be financially taxing on the two of us and our income.

Unfortunately, insurance does not cover Assistive Living or Independent Living following his maximum 14 day admission at Emory Acute Rehab Center. This is where he needs to be to get the best care for his recovery.

To be open and honest, since my parent's divorce, he has found himself in severe debt and financial struggles and basically nothing to his name. He is being evicted from his apartment at the moment, so we are hurrying to get his furniture out with the little savings my sister and I have managed and worked hard to build up since starting our careers.

We are still early on, and what's to come is still unknown. For now, we are making all the calls we can to figure out all that needs to be done and next steps.

Some of you are also aware of my personal physical and financial struggles with an accident that happened in July. I ended up falling down steep stairs breaking my ulna and radius, having a seizure, a concussion, and spending a couple of days in the hospital. I was put in a cast that ended up fusing my bones together. I had surgery to re-break the bone and have a plate and screws put in. During surgery, my radial nerve was damaged, and I now have radial nerve palsy with no function of my fingers and limited arm mobility. I have a long road of recovery, starting with occupational therapy twice a week, hoping one day I can get some function back.

My sister and I wanted to put his story out there in case anybody is in a position to help him, but mainly myself and my baby sister, who is just getting her dream career started she has worked so hard to achieve. I want him to be able to focus on his recovery and since we are left with making all the decisions, it has been the hardest thing I can think of for 27 and 30-year old daughters to handle alone. Luckily, we have a great support system of friends, coworkers, and employers who drop everything to make sure we are taking care of us and offer their advice, shoulder to cry on, vent, anything. We are also incredibly grateful for my dad's brother and sister-in-law for not even hesitating to drive down here to Georgia to offer moral support and give us the options of decisions we need to make. We are all still grieving the loss of my grandmother, my dad and uncle's mother, this past month, so their support means that much more.

Right now, we are focused on our dad's recovery, but we will have a lot to figure out financially these next few weeks and months. Right now, our only option is having my dad stay in my house while my sister and I continue to work until we can raise money and figure out finances to get him where he needs to be for his best recovery and his permanent living solution. As you can imagine, during his transitional period living with his young daughters, this will be a significant life adjustment both emotionally and again financially.

My sister and I are asking for anything you are able to contribute. Any amount will take part of the load off of our shoulders and allow us to breathe. We are truly so upset and heartbroken it has come to this, and we wish we could wake up from this nightmare. But unfortunately, this is our new reality and we are just trying to take it day by day.

Please contact if you have any questions or want information or to visit my dad. [phone redacted]

You can also contribute through venmo and cash app, which may be easier for some.
