Help My Comic Book Dream To Honor My Mentor

Pleasure to meet you! I’m Gregory, and I’m raising funds to concretize a dream that I’ve had for over 30 years: creating my own graphic novel series.

Enchanté de vous connaître! Je me présente; je m’appelle Grégory et fais une levée de fonds pour réaliser un rêve que j’ai depuis la tendre enfance, depuis au-delà de 30 années: créer ma propre série de manga.

AT THE BEGINNING / AU COMMENCEMENT

Volumes 3 and 9 were the very first ones I've read from the series.

(ENG) At the age of 9, a friend lent me a graphic novel named "Dragon Ball" created by its author, Akira Toriyama. Ever since then, this amazing artist had inspired me to dive into the passion of writing through the admiration I had for his work. From that day, I knew that this is what I wanted to do in the future: to write and create stories and fictional universes of my own just like he did.

Toriyama instantly became my idol, my mentor through his work.

In my teen years, I finally came up with the idea of my first project: Heart Of Wildfire, telling about an adventurous fantasy tale of three brothers journeying around the world for an epic goal to reach. I had decided on the creation of that story that this project would be dedicated to him.

And overtime, despite being busy with this story, I came up with other story projects as well. My imagination seemed limitless!

(FR) À l’âge de 9 ans, un ami m’avait prêté une bande dessinée intitulée “Dragon Ball”, écrit et dessiné par Akira Toriyama. Et depuis, cet extraordinaire artiste fut mon inspiration, car il m’avait introduit à la passion de l’écriture par son œuvre et l’admiration que j’avais pour sa création. Depuis ce jour, j’ai su ce que je voulais accomplir plus tard: écrire et créer mes propres histoires et univers fictifs.

Toriyama devint immédiatement mon idôle et mon mentor à travers l’oeuvre de Dragon Ball.

Lors de mon adolescence, j’ai finalement pu obtenir le concept d’une idée pour mon premier projet de manga. Ce projet porte le nom de Heart Of Wildfire, racontant les aventures fantastiques d’un trio de frères s’aventurant à travers le monde avec un but légendaire à atteindre. J’avais décidé de dédier ce projet à Mr. Toriyama, lui qui fut une grande source d’inspiration.

Au fil du temps, malgré étant occupé avec ce projet, j’ai aussi gagné la foudre d’inspiration pour d’autres idées de projets. Mon imagination semblait sans limites!

UPS & DOWNS / DES HAUTS & DES BAS

(ENG) While optimistic and determined, I came across some challenges: the lack of funds, disinterested artists, multiple rewritings, other failed crowdfunding campaigns, people discouraging me to pursue my childhood dream, etc. I tried organizing fanart contests with my own characters on DeviantArt, but without garnering the support I thought I would have.

And yet, I never gave up. Just like Toriyama had rough starts before his big break, I decided to never give up as well. His character Goku taught me to always persevere and surpass my limits with a smile on my face.

For over 20 years now, I am still passionate as the first day I came up with a story idea. That dream became a stubborn ambition that I refused to let go of.

(FR) Bien que j’étais optimistique et déterminé, beaucoup d’embûches se sont mis en travers de ma route; le manque de fonds, des artistes désintéressés, beaucoup de réécritures, des campagnes de socio-financement qui n’avaient pas atteint leur objectif, des gens qui essayaient de me décourager de mon rêve, etc. J’avais autrefois tenté d’organiser des concours de dessins fanart avec mes personnages sur le site DeviantArt, mais hélas, sans le soutien que j’avais espéré d’obtenir.

Malgré cela, je n’ai jamais abandonné. Tout comme Mr. Toriyama qui eut des difficultés à ses débuts, je refusais d’abandonner. Son personnage Sangoku m’a appris de toujours persévérer et de surpasser ses limits avec un grand sourire aux lèvres.

THE PASSING OF AN ICON / LE DÉCÈS D’UN ICÔNE LÉGENDAIRE

(ENG) Akira Toriyama was (and still is) a man that I adored and respected so much. He was the reason why I embark on the path of writing. But his sudden passing on March 2024 thoroughly wounded me. I had lost a teacher and a mentor that taught me spiritually through his work. A part of me still aches by his death. And I'm certain that many across the world feel the same.

But… I was more resolved and adamant to create and publish my stories in order to honor him and the promise I made to myself. His passing became a define moment that made me realize that I wasn’t allowed to quit and disappoint him. Ever.

(FR) Akira Toriyama fut (et est encore) un homme pour qui j’ai énormément de respect et d’admiration. Il fut la raison derrière ma motivation et ma passion pour l’écriture. Mais son décès soudain en Mars 2024 m’a incroyablement blessé. J’avais perdu un professeur et un mentor qui m’avait tant appris spirituellement à travers son travail. Jusqu’à aujourd’hui, une part en moi est toujours accablé par sa mort. Et je suis certain qu’il en ait de même pour beaucoup de gens à travers le monde.

Mais… j’étais plus entêté et résolu à réaliser mon rêve afin de bien l’honorer et de tenir la promesse que je me suis faite. Son départ devint un moment marquant pour moi qui me fit réaliser que je n’avais pas le droit d’abandonner et de le décevoir.

REACHING THE GOAL / ATTEINDRE L’OBJECTIF

Reaching the goal of this crowdfunding would kickstart the production of my comic stories to greater length. The raised funds would be solely used to create the pages, to promote them online, to offer constant material to all of you, etc.

I would finally be able to share this dream with you and embark on the journey of a graphic novel writer. And most of all, I would finally be able to make him proud; proud that I never gave up on my dream, just like he never gave up in his humble beginnings.

(FR) Atteindre l’objectif de ce socio-financement donnerait un grand coup d’envoi à la production de mes projets de manga. Les fonds levés seront utilisés uniquement à créer les pages et illustrations de mes projets, à la promotion en ligne, à offrir du contenu de manière plus constant pour vous tous, etc.

Je ferai finalement capable de partager ce rêve avec vous et d’embarquer dans ma passion d’être un scénariste de manga. Et évidemment, au-dessus de tout, je pourrai finalement rendre Mr. Toriyama fier; fier que je n’ai jamais abandonner mon rêve, tout comme lui qui n’a jamais abandonné dans ces débuts.
