Gretel Gomez’s Fight Against Leukemia
Donation protected
Fundraiser organized for Gretel Gomez.
Gretel received the devastating diagnostic of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia with Philadelphia Chromosome on January 11th, 2020, after abnormal test results on her annual check-up. She is a young single mother of two beautiful boys 12 and 17 years old. Since her diagnosis, she has been unable to return to work. She is collecting a small long-term disability benefit which mostly goes towards paying her Cobra Health Insurance premium.
She has been taking oral chemotherapy on a daily basis. In addition, she is undergoing IV chemotherapy at Baptist Hospital consisting of different medications every 16 days. For each IV chemo hospital admission, she has to remain in-patient for 4 to 5 days because IV chemo is usually very strong and drops blood counts, leaving her body with no immune system. Medication is provided along with transfusions (blood, plasma and platelets) to bring these counts up but it’s not always successful. She is currently waiting for life-saving bone marrow transplant with the goal of bringing her to remission.
She will need to have an assigned 24 hour caregiver (which is not covered by her insurance) in order to be given the green light for the bone marrow transplant. Unfortunately, she doesn’t have a family member or friend that can assist full time.
In addition to this devastating disease, Gretel lost her father to COVID-19 just a month ago in April. And she also lost her mother In 2017 after a long battle with colon cancer.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic we are all facing now, we haven’t been unable to visit her and provide her the emotional support she needs during this difficult time.
The funds collected will be used to pay for a full-time care giver for a minimum of 2 months, housekeeping, food, transportation to her medical treatments, additional expenses related to her care, and hopefully for a car down payment. To add insult to injury, Gretel’s car was stolen in April from her home.
We know these are difficult times for everyone. Every little bit counts but if you are unable to contribute, we absolutely understand and appreciate all your well wishes and prayers!
