What started the end of April as a presumed Crohn's flare escalated to an extremely critical, life threatening situation in a matter of days. Griffin was admitted to Mercy on May 2, and when the diagnosis of Fournier's was made, was transferred to Hennepin County Medical Center the following day in septic shock where he immediately underwent surgery to remove tissue that was quickly being destroyed by this rare, fast-moving infection.
Griff has had numerous surgeries to remove infected tissue, along with massive doses of antibiotics and other meds, blood transfusions, time in a hyperbaric chamber, nutrition through a tube, and other strategies to beat this. The first surgeon said, "It is like trying to control a wildfire...I am very worried for Griff." Throughout this ordeal, Griff has been kept sedated & intubated to give his body a break from the extreme pain.
At this time the incredible medical team at HCMC believes that Griffin has finally turned a corner and the focus has become healing and recovery. Today, May 14, he remains stable, sedated and intubated. They will begin the process of bringing him out of sedation in the near future & are currently doing kidney dialysis & believe that the kidneys will function again when some of the meds are out of his system, he had also had a few transfusions. His surgeon is now optimistically looking at the long-term goal of complete recovery.
Long-term is the key word here. Katie has been spending days and a lot of nights at his side. Her medical knowledge and persistence in advocating for his care, clearly saved his life. The downside of that is their two income household is down to no income for the foreseeable future until Griff's healing progresses to the point where at least Katie can get back to work. It will be much longer for Griff. There will be more surgeries in his future and rehab to gain strength and rebuild muscle.
As a family, we are circling the wagons to support Griff, Katie, Broc, and Siena. Grandma Jan and Grandpa Brad are covering the home front. Laura's family is also on the team, while she has taken time off her job to be at Katie's side. They are all a great team!
It's hard to put our feelings of gratitude into words as family, friends, and co-workers have brought meals and other sustaining gifts, spent time with us, and most important of all, prayed. We have legions of prayer warriors keeping a steady stream of petitions going straight to the heart of God, who has granted our dearest wishes for Griff 's life and healing.
Many have asked what they can do to help, so as Katie's aunt, I'm starting this Go Fund Me account so anyone who wants to help in this way, can easily do so.
Gratitude is our mantra...
For healing.
For family.
For friends.
For prayers.
For all your acts of kindness.
For ALL the BLESSINGS bestowed by a loving God through His people!
