Through inaction, Grinnell College and the city of Grinnell have fostered a community of racism and bigotry unsafe for students of color. Since the beginning of the semester, Black students have been targeted at unprecedented rates; the attacks included racial slurs, aggressive language and threats of assault. During the second day of class, a student was threatened, "Don't think I won't smoke you right here, stupid f*cking n*gger." Multiple other students have been harassed with similar language in the town and, more recently, within the campus. This past Sunday, October 9th, 17 cars and two directory signs were vandalized with racial slurs and imagery. Grinnell College's inaction and inadequate responses have left students feeling unsafe, fearful, exhausted and angry. These feelings are intensified by midterms and apathy from faculty not providing grace for our trauma. Black students are still required to uphold duties, such as classes, work, exams, and assignments while tending to our mental and emotional health without the college's explicit support for us. All proceeds will be put towards providing food, transportation and general welfare for Black students suffering from trauma associated with the recent events in Grinnell, Iowa.
