Sharing Rain from Urban Roofs w Native Growers

Covenant Pathways, a Navajo led organization is located on the Navajo reservation in Vanderwagen, NM. It was created with the vision of “Healing the Soil, Healing the Soul.” Spirit Farm, the working farm of Covenant Pathways is an experiential farm that only uses natural practices including microbiological compost to heal the high desert southwestern soil and be a living example of how we can recover and reclaim traditional farming and spiritual practices, along with modern practices, to establish resiliency in our way of life. The organization also provides resources and training for Indigenous growers to expand and start their own healthy soil farms.

The greatest challenge in our community for Native growers is access to water. Families living on the reservation in our region have no access to water for growing food, unless it is hauled in or sequestered. In recent months we have gained permission from an assisted living facility in Gallup, NM and a Navajo Chapter House to install rain catchment tanks and share the collected rainwater with growers in their nearby communities. We have raised money to purchase and install several large rain catchment tanks beginning the first week of April 2024.

BUT, we need a WATER TRUCK to transport the rainwater from the Urban tanks to the Native growers. Please consider sharing this link and making a donation to purchase a water truck to impact Native growers.

Our ambition at Covenant Pathways and Spirit Farm is to continue developing strategies that increase Healthy Food Access in our indigenous communities. Water is a central key ingredient necessary historically, at present and as we prepare for the future. We want a future where we all can grow our own nutrient rich foods.
