Grow a Reader

I teach a diverse group of kindergarten students who love to read! About 30 percent of my class qualifies for free and reduced lunch. I also have several English Language Learners each year. I have applied to attend Lucy Calkins’ “Teacher College Reading and Writing Project Summer Institute” held at Columbia University in New York City, as a professional development learning opportunity that will push me to be the best reading teacher I can be for ALL students! Lucy Calkins, founder of the Reading and Writing Project says, “The research on reading achievement is unequivocal and longstanding, and it shows clearly that reading is…everything. Children’s reading engagement, including the amount and variety of what they read, is directly linked not just to reading achievement, but also to overall academic achievement.”

Those attending the institute receive over 7 hours a day of focused instruction on developing classroom and school cultures that value the reading workshop model premise of developing strong student agency, inquiry, and collaboration. Other topics covered will include instruction on implementation of Lucy Calkins’ Reading Units of Study, phonics as an integral component of early literacy, and comprehension strategy instruction. Attending the reading institute will provide me with the cutting edge knowledge necessary to continually improve implementation of a reading workshop in my own classroom. It will also provide me the opportunity to guide and support other teachers in workshop implementation.

I have been accepted into the “Reading Institute”, which will be held during the week of August 7-August 11. I have been wanting to attend the institute ever since I launched the workshop model with my first class of students eleven years ago. In the past, lack of funding available for professional development opportunities for public school teachers prevented me from even applying. This year I decided to take a different approach and apply anyway, in the hopes that others might see the value in such an opportunity and offer some support.

I am passionate about the reading workshop model because I have seen what an amazing impact it has had on my students! This professional development opportunity  will help me  continue to be an effective reading workshop ambassador in my school district and beyond. Thank you so very much for your consideration in supporting our future. After all, “A child who reads is an adult who thinks!”
