On Nov. 3 my best friends son, Townes, was taken to the ER after vomiting and being very lethargic. He was later flown to Temple Scott and White. We now know that Townes has Type 1 diabetes. His body is just not producing insulin. It's very scary and we know that this diagnosis is life changing. Townes has been moved out of ICU, so that's good news. Jennifer and Lu will continue to work with the specialists to figure out everything they need to do to take care of Townes. Please continue to pray for their family and this new path that they are on. I am confident that they will get through this. Thank you all for the prayers and sweet texts. Townes turns 2 on Sunday, and he's a strong, brave little man! We would appreciate any help you can give towards the Luthers!! Let's all pray for Townes and hope he comes home soon, HAPPY and HEALTHY!!!!
What Is Type 1 Diabetes?
Type 1 diabetes, once known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, is a chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin, a hormone needed to allow sugar (glucose), starches and other food to enter cells to produce energy. The far more common type 2 diabetes occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn't make enough insulin.
Various factors may contribute to type 1 diabetes, including genetics and exposure to certain viruses. Although type 1 diabetes usually appears during childhood or adolescence, it also can begin in adults. Only 5% of people with diabetes have this form of the disease.
Myth: Eating too much sugar causes diabetes.
Fact: Type 1 diabetes is caused by genetics and unknown factors that trigger the onset of the disease.
Despite active research, type 1 diabetes has no cure. But it can be managed. With the help of insulin therapy and other treatments, even young children can learn to manage their condition and live long, healthy lives.
