COVID-19 EMERGENCY FOOD FOR INDIGENOUS FAMILIES
Donation protected
These forgotten small farmers are part of a community of 500 families living in the beautiful highlands of Guatemala-- They are all rural extremely poor, lovely indigenous people who care about their children and have nothing to feed them during the COVID-19 shutdown crisis.
The traditional main central market closed weeks ago. They receive zero government food aid despite the COVID-19 crisis response. They are totally isolated. This is planting season, not harvest time, so there is no corn yet in the fields.
I have a long standing personal relationship with a wonderful young man in this small community. His name is Elder (in photo with face covering). He was the first in his community to graduate from university, thanks to his character and dedication and to outside financial help (mine). He is now an agronomist, and makes time to teach his community to farm sustainably.
Sustainability is currently not possible:
Elder's community is on the brink of famine due to COVID-19 eclipsing the odd jobs these people depend on to buy beans, rice, onions, corn for tortillas, cooking oil, bananas.
As a agronomist he is able to draw upon his contacts to obtain food staples directly from larger producers, which is opening a huge opportunity to obtain otherwise unobtainable staples at this moment of market shutdowns.
I am reaching out to all of us who, at some time or another, felt a connection to the plight of indigenous peoples around the world, to Mayan culture past and present, to the small children at risk of malnutrition.
AT STAKE: Without this emergency solidarity, kids and their families will lose weight and become weak from malnutrition, leaving them even more vulnerable to COVID.
Please help me and Elder bring food baskets to these extremely poor, beautiful indigenous families. We are starting our emergency food gifts with 50 families, for 12 weeks . 1 basket of food staples per week.
50 FAMILIES /
12 BASKETS OF SURVIVAL FOOD PER FAMILY (1/week x 12 weeks)

TOTAL: 600 SURVIVAL FOOD BASKETS
Each survival food basket + extra corn = $20.00
We need to raise $12,000.
We are calling this Phase 1, as more indigenous families are identified we will post their situation in our updated information over the coming weeks.
WE DISTRIBUTED THE FIRST SURVIVAL FOOD BASKETS TO 4 FAMILIES A FEW DAYS AGO. THIS IS ONE OF THESE FAMILIES. THE HUSBAND CRIED. THE MOM WAS SHOCKED THAT SOMEONE WOULD CARE SO MUCH.
