Roy's Life Interrupted

Pedro, our dear friend Roy Ferrara needs our help! Your support is needed to get Roy the care he needs to continue his long recovery, including getting him walking, talking, and back to his home so he can reunite with his cat Genie. His family appreciates anything you can give.
Here's Roy's story, from his sister Enzinna:
Over six months ago Roy Ferrara decided he was ready for a career change. He enrolled with South Bay Work Source in Torrance and he had just completed several months of CNC training at El Camino College. He was also getting ready for his yearly summer pilgrimage to Alaska for the Salmon run. Then, on February 19th he was rushed to the hospital by ambulance after mom’s caregiver found him very ill and unresponsive. I rushed to the ER to see him—he was wide awake and annoyed that the bed was uncomfortable. This was Roy's first time since he was “an accident prone kid” that he was in a hospital. What we both thought was going to be a simple overnight stay for observation for flu/pneumonia changed overnight, when he went into full respiratory failure at 4am, and then his kidneys failed a day or two later. He was placed into an induced coma to help his body recover—and he didn’t wake up till over three weeks later.
Roy was recently transferred to a long term acute hospital in Gardena where they are now trying to wean him off both the breathing and dialysis machines so he can start retraining how to speak, eat, use his hands, and walk again. But this road to recovery will be a long one. At this time he is still very weak, can't speak but tries very hard, and is working on moving his hands, arms and legs. Once he is finally able to come home he will still need lots of help to regain his independence.
Our home will probably need to have some modifications made such as having a ramp on front stairs and maybe the back stairs as well. Roy will be needing a bed that is adjustable, possibly with bars that help him get out of bed and assist with his breathing apnea as well. We will definitely need to get a 24/7 caregiver that can also give him therapy in the home, so someone will have to be able to move into the extra room and that room will also need to have a new bed as well. My tentative plan is to have a live-in caregiver to help Roy and mom. Mom will still have her regular caregiver during the week, but there is simply too much work for one and we don’t want to overburden one person.
This is the main reason for the need to fundraise for Roy. Any amount donated in helping him is truly appreciated. Your contribution will be used not only to get Roy reunited with his cat Genie, but will also help in getting mom back home as well. Since Roy was her main caregiver, she had to temporarily move to Seattle Washington to live with my sister Josie while Roy is recovering.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of Roy’s friends, our wonderful neighbors, and family who have given us nothing support and prayers. Your love is invaluable and I’m positive that we could not have come this far without it—my family, Roy, and I will always be forever grateful and in your debt.
