My parents came to Europe in March 2020 to visit my brother in Czech Republic and attend my & Dennis’ wedding in the Netherlands. Two days before their flight to Amsterdam, all borders in Europe were closed due to the Covid lockdown. They never made it to the Netherlands, and as many of you know, neither did our wedding celebration ever take place.
Now, three seasons later, since there are still no flights to Uzbekistan they are still in Czech Republic.
But the blessing in disguise of being stuck in Brno is that my brother took the opportunity to have them go through a thorough health check. Mainly, because the healthcare system in Uzbekistan is close to non-existent, with most of the equipment in hospitals being from Soviet times and lack of competent medical experts.
One of these diagnostics has revealed that my mom had cervical cancer. The good news was that it was at early stage, so they hoped to remove all affected areas by removing the uterus. The surgery went well, and to make sure the cancerous cells are completely removed, the doctors have prescribed her to still have a month of radiation therapy. Because their health insurance covers only ‘emergency situations’ (as would any travel health insurance people arrange when going on a holiday for a month) we have been paying the medical costs out of pocket. In order to start the radiation we need to come up with even more money, but unfortunately, we are unable to fully cover this ourselves.
We went to visit them a few weeks ago right after her surgery. She was recovering well but needing to prep both physically and emotionally for the month long series of radiation treatments. It was ironic that out of all people, she was the one wanting us to have kids the most, and then when we were there, she wasn’t even able to hug her long-wanted grandchild because of being all patched up after her surgery :/
We know these are times of uncertainty for many people, therefore please don't feel any expectation to donate more than what a cup of coffee or glass of beer would cost you. Little drops make an ocean.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
