Gwen Cuenin Snead Support Fund

On Thursday July 7 while at home, Gwen suffered a massive brainstem stroke causing significant damage to her brain. Gwen was taken to Augusta University and is currently in Neuro ICU. She is being closely monitored and cared for by a team of neurologists and medical professionals including physical therapists, occupational therapists, respiratory therapist, speech language therapist, and a wonderful nursing staff. Visitors must be limited, as Gwen’s recovery requires rest.

Gwen has Locked-In Syndrome. Locked-In syndrome is a rare neurological disorder in which there is complete paralysis of all voluntary muscles except for the ones that control the movements of the eyes. Individuals with locked-in syndrome are conscious and awake but have no ability to produce movements (outside of eye movement) or to speak. Communication is possible through eye movements or blinking.

Gwen has a tracheostomy and a permanent feeding tube. The trach is currently attached to a ventilator and hopefully can be turned down slowly and eventually removed from the trach. The family is looking at options for continued care for Gwen. She needs a top-notch rehabilitation facility that specializes in stroke/brain injuries.

Gwen, DJ, Dylan and her family face a long road ahead. The journey will be emotionally, physically and financially difficult and draining. These funds will help with Gwen’s care, travel, medical equipment, and other unforeseen expenses that will arise in the coming months.

Everyone sending love and prayers to Gwen knows that she possesses great strength and determination. With her smile and encouraging way, she simply radiated love. She unselfishly poured her heart into all she did- mother, wife, daughter, sibling, friend, and teacher at Episcopal Day School.
