My son Owen is 11 years old and on 29th of April 2018 he was diagnosed with Burkitts Lymphoma, a rare form of Leukaemia. Only a few weeks before this, Owen enjoyed a family camping trip on the Murray River and in a very short time his symptoms were very concerning.
I took Owen for blood tests and then to the Emergency Department at Mildura Base Hospital, the next day he was flown to The Royal Childrens Hospital in Melbourne. After many tests, he was diagnosed and began intensive chemotherapy that day.
Owens lymphoma was thought to be doubling in size each day and spread to his throat, abdomen and bone marrow.
Owens chemotherapy protocol is very intensive, using a range of chemotherapy drugs, lumbar punctures and with very little time between cycles.
Thanks to the doctors of the Royal Children’s Hospital, Mildura Base Hospital and his GP at Ontario Medical Centre, who acted quickly to diagnose and treat Owen, if not he wouldn’t be here today.
Owen is adored by his family and extended family; his brothers and sisters are all thinking of him and want to see him when they can.
Owen is such an awesome kid, loved by all and highly respected at his local school in Irymple.
The costs associated with relocating to Melbourne, giving up work, medical and travel expenses are very high on top of the regular mortgage payments and costs of living. We all want to be able to support Owen the best we can because he is such a fighter and we need to be there for him to recover.
Owen will be in Melbourne until September at least and will have regular visits to Melbourne for two years after that and beyond.
Owen has a good chance of remission and is very positive about his condition.
