Wheelchair and Medical Funding

Hi, my name is Kayla, I’m 25 and I have a variety of chronic and terminal illnesses. The doctors have told me I will be lucky to make it past 30.

Due to my illnesses, I am on the Ontario disability support services (ODSP). While I’m incredibly grateful for the funding I receive, it’s no where near enough to live off of. For full transparency, I make less than $900 a month on disability.

I have a medication that isn’t covered by the governmental benefits. It totals about $550 a month on that medicine alone. I also need to pay my phone bill. A phone is crucial in my care for a few reasons. 1) being able to call and have video calls with doctors. 2) when I’m inpatient in the hospital, as opposed to using my tv or laptop, I much prefer my phone to watch YouTube, movies, listen to music, etc. I also have to pay off university debts and money owed to my parents for loans from them.

Finally, I’ve reached the point now where I need a wheelchair for trips out of the house, as my declining health limits my abilities to be independent and the debilitating/excruciating pain from walking has all become a bit too much.

From the depths of my core I feel terrible asking for financial support, but at this point, I simply don’t have the funds to afford the critical medications and applications for my health, and the government has informed me there’s nothing more than we get in terms of funding.

I really would love to have a wheelchair as it would regain some of my independence and allow me to go out more without worrying about falling due to seizures, fainting or dislocating. This is a life changer.

Being given five years or less as an estimate was devastating, so I’m just trying to do the best and most I can with what I have left in me to fight.
