Laura is a single mom (36 years old) who has supported herself and three children by herself since they were very young. Trey graduated in May and Isaac (13) and Shae (12) start school soon. Due to extreme pain and no idea what was happening she has not been able to work for several months.
Her orthopedic Dr. discovered extremely swollen glands in her neck and thyroid. After many tests they have found thyroid cancer and lymphomatic growths in her neck, behind her collar bone and sternum that seems to be spreading. She is scheduled to fly to Seattle Cancer Center on August 18, pre-op will be on the 19th and surgery on the 21st. They will remove the thyroid and the cancer in the lymphoid on both sides of her neck and behind the chest bone.
After the surgery there will be radiation iodine treatment to kill the rest of the cancer. She will be in total isolation for 3 days following that. With removing both sides of the neck and the thyroid she will be on thyroid medication and calcium supplements that need monitoring for the rest of her life.
Projected cost for the surgeries and radiation treatment are projected to be between $200,000 and $600,000. This does not include expenses already incurred, or that will follow. She has only some Medicaid to help an there are large Co-pays involved.
