Run 50-miles for Phoebe Carmody
Donation protected
On December 13, 2014, I will be running the Brazos Bend race. I am registered to run the fifty-mile race, but I fully intended to tack on as many extra miles as God will allow me to complete.
I'm asking friends, family, and fellow running friends to donate whatever you can per mile. You may wait and donate after I complete my race, or you may donate as you can, whenever you can.
Phoebe's Story
On April 19, 2013, Phoebe was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Just one week prior, Phoebe started to run a low fever and act a little worn down. Our family had no idea of the journey in which we were about to embark. We thought Phoebe had a virus... we were certain the hematologist would confirm this... we had the life sucked from our bodies when we were told that our middle child, age four at the time, would be admitted to the hospital immediately and that we would not be stopping at Chuck E. Cheese on our way home as a reward for bravery through the needle pokes and procedures.
For our family, April 19th is the day the earth stood still. Cancer. Our child has cancer. We watched her vomit until she was frail and thin, lose her ability to walk, lose all of her hair she was trying so desperately to grow out like Rapunzel, get poked with needles and endure spinal taps more times than we can count. We also watched her have seizures as a side effect of one of her chemo drugs that was very necessary to save her life.
She now takes 4 different oral medicines a day and has her port in her chest accessed to receive chemo, as well as being put to sleep to receive chemo via spinal tap... you learn quickly that this is called intrathecal chemo, but we call it "go to sleep" chemo.
We have also watched Phoebe teach herself to keep her medicines down without vomiting. We watched her fight hard to gain back her strength to be able to walk again. Her hair is short, but she is very proud of all that is growing back.
We have witnessed a very bizarre world become our everyday life.
Phoebe is very small for her age and one of Shakespeare's quotes describes her best, "Though she be but little, she is fierce!"
She still has just under a year of treatment left, and we anticipate Phoebe to tackle it head on and mighty as ever. She is our brave little champion.
Our family is a family of five. Myself, my husband (Steve), our oldest child Cason (8), Pheebs (6), and Meredith (4). We've traveled as a pack to most of Phoebe's treatments and try to separate as little as possible.
Our testimony thus far is that while we are not thankful for leukemia, we are thankful for the opportunity to fight... so very thankful that Phoebe has the chance to fight and aware that so many people never get that opportunity. We have never questioned our faith that Phoebe will beat this and that leukemia will one day be a fuzzy memory for us... we have God and medicine on our side, and Phoebe is a fighter!
Why donate now?
On October 31, Phoebe's father was laid off from his job, where he'd been employed for 16 years. On that date, all medical benefits ceased immediately.
This family is fighting a truly incredible battle.
