Vulnerable Children of Mityana

St. Menas supports Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) in Mityana, Uganda and surrounding communities, empowering those in its care to grow up and sustain themselves.
Currently, St. Menas has 133 OVC residents in its care. The residence lacks basic sanitary facilities with children using bed pans for their needs.
We have completed the bathroom and shower facilities of Phase 1, and are embarking on raising funds for a kitchen. It is hard to imagine feeding 130 children with no kitchen facilities, but that is the current situation.

My career as a consultant has provided me with opportunities to see and experience the world and many different cultures. The experiences provided have been more rewarding than I can express. It has also opened my eyes to some of the extreme injustices of the world. Since my earliest days in consulting I have made it my mission to do something in every country to leave at least one thing better than I found it.
No experience has touched me deeper than seeing and meeting the vulnerable children of Uganda.
I always strive my hardest to provide the highest level of consulting, but to really touch a community it is important to give something personal. In keeping with that, I identified an orphanage in Mityana, Uganda that is doing so much right for this world, but lacks the financial resources to provide completely for the most vulnerable children that it takes in.
St. Menas Orphans and Vulnerable Children Home, located in Mityana, Uganda was founded by a single Ugandan family. They have committed their very existence on this planet to raising up the voiceless children that live on the streets of Uganda. In 2000, Fr. Azariah Kabanda Mukasa, Mrs. Mary Mukasa and Mr Masagazi Joel Yawe took their vision for a better Uganda, and upon retirement committed their pensions to raise and educate homeless children so that those children could (and would) become self-sustaining and contributing members of the larger Ugandan community.
By all measures, they have been successful, raising and educating hundreds of children. Currently they have 133 children in residence. They care for those children, feed and clothe them, and provide them with a quality education. I came across this wonderful family and took some time to visit them. My first thought was to ask myself how I could help. I brought them books and pencils for their school. I left small amounts of cash to help with day-to-day expenses. But I knew much more was needed. I talked to Becky, the daughter of the founders, who, very well-educated in her own right, left her professional career to dedicate her life to the project. I asked her if I could help raise funds to provide beds for the children.
We obtained quotations for beds from a local supplier. I was planning for the delivery of new beds before Christmas! Then one day Becky called me and said “Kevin, there is no doubt that our children need beds, but we have even a more pressing need. We have no sanitary facilities! The children use bed pans, many of them sharing with another child. We have the design and plans, we have the permissions, we have the contractor, but no funds to start.”
The cost to construct the kitchen is $18,000.
