Bring Skylar Home

Donation protected
Skylar Mack is an 18 year old biology major at Mercer University. On November 27, 2020, she traveled to the Cayman Islands.  Prior to her flight from the United States, Skylar tested negative for COVID.  She also tested negative upon arrival to the Islands. Per current COVID-19 regulations, anyone visiting the Cayman Islands is required to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival, even though they have tested negative for the virus. During her visit, Skylar made the irresponsible decision to attend a jet ski competition in spite of the 14 day quarantine restriction.   As a result, Skylar was arrested that afternoon. Initially, she was fined $2,600 and 40 hours of community service. However, the prosecutors appealed for a harsher sentence in order to “make an example” to others who may consider breaking the quarantine restrictions.  At the appeal, the judge agreed with the prosecution and Skylar was sentenced to 4 months in prison.  As family, we know that breaking the quarantine was not the right decision for Skylar to make and there are always consequences for every decision made. However, she is a young 18 year old, honor roll college student, with no prior criminal record.  She is scared and alone in a foreign prison.  She now sees that she made the wrong choice and regrets the decision to the fullest degree. The sentence of 4 months in prison for attending an outdoor event after testing negative for COVID on numerous occasions is very harsh and undeserving.  She is a young adult, who made one bad decision.  She didn’t see the harm in attending an outdoor event after testing negative and didn’t anticipate the severity of the consequences for her actions. The family is fighting for a reduced sentence and the ability to bring Skylar home; however, the attorney fees have become overwhelming.  I am asking everyone reading this to think about the mistakes you have made in your life and how those mistakes could have changed the course of your life for the better or for the worse. This was one mistake that should not be met with such harsh punishment.  Skylar has a bright future ahead of her and needs to be home with her family.  Please consider helping us reach our goal to pay for attorney fees in order to bring Skylar home!
