Habitat for Humanity Partner Families Legal Fees
Donation protected
We are the Partner Families of Habitat for Humanity Edmonton. 2-4 years ago, we signed up to the program when it entailed a no down payment, no interest, and affordable monthly payments. Throughout this time there has never been an indication through documentation or workshops that the homeownership model would change and that the organization has the authority to change it at any point. These families spent many years working hard to build their homes, put in 500hrs or “sweat equity”, endured the financial expenses of moving, and emotional burden of uprooting their kids. We have fulfilled our end of the agreement, which is to complete the 500 equity hours, attend workshops, allow the ongoing release of our information, participate in accommodation inspection reports, and honour our monthly payments within the first year, and expected that Habitat for Humanity Edmonton honour their end of the agreement. However, we relied on Habitat for Humanity’s reputations to our own detriment. Now that the time of signing the homeownership agreement has arrived, the organization has decided to change it to a model which is not in alignment with what we signed up for. This will mean some families will have to leave the homes they worked so hard for.
We have tried many times to come to a fair agreement with the leadership of the organization, however they have continuously refused to come to a fair settlement with Partner Families, which has led us to file a lawsuit against the organization.
Currently, 55 families, and counting, are suing Habitat for Humanity Edmonton for misleading them in the homeownership program. Due to this we enduring legal costs and would encourage anyone who is donating to Habitat for Humanity Edmonton to instead consider donating to our legal expenses. Therefore, donors, volunteers and others who have been a part of helping these families attain homeownership can continue to help these families by helping them fight this injustice they are currently facing.
