Hacker Bomb Truck

Donation protected
We're raising money for the retired PPD Explosives Disposal Unit that is currently hosted at our Hackerspace in North Portland. This truck is truly amazing and we encourage anyone supporting the cause to come by during any open Hackerspace event to get a tour.

The bomb truck is an asset in our hacker/maker community and beyond, being regularly used for PSAS, ARES, PBEM NET BEECN Exercises, as a mobile hackerspace and for Maker Faire.

We want to keep this vehicle, which currently has less than 60,000 miles, up and running into the future, but the bomb truck owner has run into some unexpected costs.

Unexpected costs:

Full Engine Rebuild. We were up early and 40 miles out of Portland, headed to a remote central Oregon launch site for the Portland State Aerospace Society when a new and concerning tapping from the bomb truck engine was heard. Once we pulled over our caravan of ~12 vehicles and diagnosed, it became clear that the bomb truck would not be able to make it any further. We found coolant in the oil reservoir, which usually indicates a blown gasket.

More than $1200 across two tow trips later, the dealership determined a full engine rebuild was required.  This turned into a debt-creating sum of over $12,300.

Blown Retread #1, 30 miles into our recent 600 mile round trip to toorcamp, the bomb truck experienced a retread blowing off, causing us to need emergency repair. Unexpected cost: $780

Oil Leak: 100 miles after an engine rebuild, while refueling, the engine was found to be leaking oil. This was covered by the International dealer who did the rebuild, but still ended up costing an unexpected $100 for lodging while it was being repaired.

Blown Retread #2, 150 miles from the end of our trip, and with only 2 of 6 tires being retreads, we experienced a second blown tire. Unexpected cost: $820

That's a total unexpected cost of $14,000 to keep the bomb truck in working order. We're looking to help the bomb truck owner recoup a little bit of these costs. By helping him we're also helping the hacker, maker and volunteer emergency services communities in and around Portland.
