Hi, my name is Hailey.

I’m a transgender woman from St. Louis, MO. I am writing here today to ask for help from people in my community. I recently got a new job that allows me to now have health insurance, which I am very grateful for because that means I am finally able to start looking into gender-affirming surgeries for myself. In the past, with my state insurance, I had my request for surgery denied because the provider didn’t deem my procedure as “medically necessary,” so this is my second attempt at hopefully getting my surgery covered.

From my research into my plan, I have come to the conclusion that if my surgery is covered, my employer will cover 80% of the bill, which leaves me with 20% of the cost of the surgery for me to cover. I was originally quoted with my surgery costing just around $16,000, so 20% of that is around $3200. However, with my insurance being brand new for me, I have yet to meet my deductible for my plan, which is another $1600.

Lastly, and the thing that I’m worried most about, is my recovery expenses for the procedure. My surgeon recommended that I should take off work for about a month or so, which would mean I would not be being paid during that time. I plan to reach out to my provider to see if there is anything like short-term disability that my company would offer that would hopefully help me financially even if for a little bit; however, I have come to the conclusion that around $1200 would help me with covering my rent, food, and any other expenses that I may have in that month.

So, as bad as I am at asking for help of any kind, I come to you all asking for just exactly that. I don’t at this time have any timeline of when I’m wanting to have this procedure take place; obviously, the sooner the better would be best though. I also would like to make it abundantly clear that I am well aware of the amount of other tragedies going on in the world right now, and anything monetary that I end up receiving from this GoFundMe and don’t use towards my surgery will be going towards Operation Olive Brand as well as other transgender individuals directly who are seeking help with gender-affirming surgeries.

I appreciate anyone for reading what I have to say here. Any sort of support, whether it be monetarily or just sharing it online, is more than I can ask for. This procedure has been something that I have wanted for many years now, and this is the closest I’ve gotten in being able to actually get it done.
