Haitian Village Earthquake relief Fund
As many of you know, a 7.2 Magnitude earthquake devastated the Southwestern part of Haiti on August 14th, 2021. The areas of Les Cayes and Grand’Anse felt the brunt of it with many homes, hospitals, churches, schools, and buildings destroyed. Many lives have been lost, many are injured and thousands in Aux Cayes and Grand’Anse are currently homeless with nowhere to go.
Au Centre is a mountain village in Grand’Anse where my family has called home for generations. It is deep in the countryside, far from the nearest town, with terrible and inaccessible roads. When it comes to aid and relief, the Haitian government is unreliable and the limited resources are often given to bigger cities while neglecting and abandoning villages such as Au Centre. As of this morning, all but 3 homes in the village have been completely destroyed and many are left homeless, with no food, no basic necessities and no hope of relief. We are raising this money on behalf of an Au Centre youth-based organization called Osant Ann Avanse (OAA, translation: Au Centre Let’s Advance) which is currently collecting funds and working on rebuilding Au Centre and helping the local community after this morning’s tragedy.
Funds will be handled by me and OAA who will work with the local community to purchase and distribute basic necessities such as food, water, medical equipment, clothes, toiletries, materials such as plywood, cement, sheet metal etc. Au Centre began as a village of slaves who ran away to the mountains prior to Haitian revolution. It is a special, magical place and its people are beautiful, strong, and resilient despite overcoming tragedy after tragedy, natural disaster after natural disaster, just like our ancestors. Any amount will help and if you are not able to help financially at the moment, sharing is also appreciated. We thank you in advance!
