Supporting Girls Empowerment in Haiti
The Haitian Women’s Collective (HWC) is an organization focused on advancing the health, education, and leadership of communities in Haiti. HWC will build on its work to empower girls in Haiti by launching a two year program to support 20 adolescent girls to complete secondary school and provide them with sexual and reproductive health education, life skills training, and leadership development and civic engagement opportunities. The program will focus on girls in their final two years (average age 15-18) of schooling to support their future enrollment in higher education.
Haitian women have a literacy rate of 57% compared to a 64% average in men. Young girls with little or no education are more likely to have unplanned pregnancies and face domestic violence. Those who are unable to attend learning facilities are also subjected to domestic labor and increased poverty. Secondary education can help women and girls earn higher salaries, as well as access more opportunities to break the cycle of poverty in their families.
The HWC project will provide financial support for school fees as well as access to technology, both of which are often barriers to girls’ education.
Some of the key components of the project include:
- Workshops using evidence based curricula on comprehensive sexual and reproductive health education
- Educational, life skills workshops to support the ongoing development of communication, negotiation, and financial literacy skills
- On an annual basis, a summer conference will be held to reinforce the content of monthly workshops and educational areas with a focus on STEAM career exploration
- Engaging parents with workshops, programming to meet community development goals
- All girls will be required to complete a public engagement activity to allow for leadership development and showing “Girls Can Lead” as part of our public campaign
