Beginning in early May of 2018, a series of volcanic events have been devastating the Puna area of the Big Island of Hawaii. Volcanic fissures have developed, affecting entire neighborhoods and communities, causing evacuations, and displacement of many local families, including the Hamiltons. There have been ongoing issues as a result of these eruptions, including scarcity of supplies, fires, and poor air quality due to sulfur dioxide and ash. To date nearly 700 homes have been destroyed.
On Tuesday May 15th, one of the largest ash explosions at Halemaumau crater to date occurred, creating a plume that exceeded 12,000 feet above sea level at its peak.
The Hamilton family made the decision to evacuate their 7 acre property and temporarily relocate to their original home, Kauai, on May 16th. Thanks to the kindness and generosity of many (especially the Vasallo Ohana!) they have had a warm and cozy place to stay.
As madame Pele continues to ebb and flow, the Hamiltons find themselves in limbo-their property has been the center of their focus for the past few years as they have poured the entirety of their savings, hard work and love into developing the property into a home for their growing family. Isaac built their Hawaiian style shack with his own two hands. With aching hearts they watch from afar as the lava continues to claim some of the Big Island's most precious places.
It is our hope to raise enough money to put the Hamilton family into a place of stability-a new place to call home as they move forward and adjust their trajectory as a growing young family.
We thank you for taking the time to read this and are so grateful for the many wonderful individuals who have reached out in big and small ways to bless this family.
