Handicap Van & Home Renovations for Holly Gaskins

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Ashley Gaskins. My mom's name is Holly Gaskins. My mom began having health issues in 2020 - she began losing balance and falling. They spent two years trying to figure out what was going on, trying medications, and doing physical therapy to improve her health. She was finally diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and Dystonia in January 2022. My mom is no longer able to work, do household chores, cook, etc. My dad is able to work remotely in order to take care of my mom during the day. We are also blessed that my grandma lives nearby and is able to come take care of some of the household chores.

When my parents moved into their home in 2021, my mom was only using a cane and was still able to walk for the most part with the assistance of her cane or walker. Her condition accelerated quickly over the next year or so before she was officially diagnosed in 2022. She is now fully wheelchair bound. They had no idea that they would be needing a home that was more wheelchair accessible. They have been able to make small improvements over time, but are still a ways away from a handicap accessible home. Cost of improvements to the home have been the biggest barrier to making everything more handicap accessible.

My parents also purchased a Kia Soul when my mom started having minor symptoms because of the cars height - it was easier for my mom to get in and out of a lower sitting vehicle and the car had enough space for her to store her cane or walker. Now that she is completely wheelchair bound, my parents have a hard time maneuvering to get my mom in and out of the car and into her wheelchair. Sometimes it can take 10-minutes or more just to get my mom in and out of the car.

I am hoping that this GoFundMe can raise money for my parents to get some remodeling done to their home - mostly a bathroom remodel - to make it handicap accessible. They have been given estimated by some local remodeling companies of $10-$15K to make their bathroom handicap accessible.

I am also hoping to raise funds to help my parents in purchasing a handicap accessible van so that my parents don't have to work so hard to get my mom in and out of the car and they can just wheel her into the car. They have been searching for used handicap vans and are expecting to spend anywhere from $60-$80k on a van.

My parents have been slowly adjusting over time to my mom's condition, but it has gotten to the point where they can't wait for these things anymore. They have been able to save some money over time, but not nearly enough to cover a bathroom remodel and a handicap van.

Please consider donating to help my parents. Any and every donation is greatly appreciated.
