UPDATE:
***Fundraising has been very helpful so far and we are all very thankful for the help that has been given! The amount has been updated, and we are now setting our sights on some larger long term goals. Ultimately, we would like to give Sam and the children the ability to own land and raise live stock. This would make them much more capable of providing for themselves on some small ways such as cultivating crops and eating chicken eggs. This is no small goal but all we can do is rest in the Lord's provision and make our requests known to him and our needs known to one another. Everyone's continued support is much appreciated!***
Hello! My name is Shay, and I am fundraising for the Hands of Hope Kids Academy in Uganda.
Hands of Hope is a small community of about 50 people in the Village of Nakawala, near Kampala, Uganda. In simplest terms, the community is an orphanage.
I first came into contact with them through instagram, and I have had a regular correspondence with them since late July. The person I have direct contact with is called Lubega Samuel, or just Sam. Sam began caring for about 10 children in 2017, and that number has grown to about 50. Sam's heart for children stems from growing up as an orphan himself after his parents died in a car accident when he was young. Many of the children are permanent residents of the orphanage, but Sam also cares for and provides a refuge for various other children in his village. 3 of the children that stay there belong to a woman named Grace, who is currently the only help that Sam has. Together, Sam and Grace care for, cook for, and generally shepherd the children. Sam teaches the children to pray, reads scripture aloud to them, and spurs them on in thankfulness and praise to God in Jesus name.
While the children are blessed to have Sam and Grace, there is only so much they can do. Grace stays with the children full time, and Sam works in the city. Sam works about 3 days a week, and he makes approximately 3 dollars a day.
Their most urgent need is food. It costs only a dollar a day to feed each person. What may seem like a meager amount to you is life changing in Uganda, and without support, they will go without what they need.
The main goal is to take an initial offering to cover urgent needs, then try to build steady support through consistent donations. My dream is to find 50 people willing to pledge $1 a day just to make sure they have enough food. If 100 people donated only 50 cents a day, this entire community would be fed. Such a small amount would go unnoticed from our pockets, and it would make a world of difference to our brothers and sisters in need.
