Odyssey of the Mind is an international creative problem-solving program that engages students in their learning by allowing their knowledge and ideas to come to life in an exciting, productive environment. The Hanes Magnet Middle School Problem 3 team began working together in October of 2018. Over a six month period they brainstormed, designed, wrote and re-wrote, constructed, and problem solved to prepare for the NC Northern Regional competition on March 9, 2019, where they came in first place, advancing on to the state level. Knowing competition heats up at the state finals, the team re-evaluated their solution and made enhancements to their set, costumes, and script, and presented a much improved product at East Carolina University on April 6. Through a combination of high scores in the spontaneous portion of the competition and a strong performance of their long-term problem, this Hanes Problem 3 team came in 1st place, beating out 13 other teams!
The first and second place teams continue on to represent North Carolina at the OM World Finals at Michigan State University May 22-25. The registration, which includes a dorm room and meal plan is $595 per person and this team has 5 students, 2 coaches, 1 teacher coordinator, and 2 parents willing to transport the sets. Additionally, the funds will go toward travel costs for the 10+ hour drive to Michigan.
Over a span of nearly 40 years, World Finals has been the culmination of a year’s worth of hard work for the millions of students across the world who have participated in Odyssey of the Mind. If this fundraiser is a success it will be the first time for all of the students on this team to travel to the World Finals! It would be a tremendous experience that they will remember for the rest of their lives.
