AN IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE IN ART AND ECOLOGY
As the world begins to finally bloom anew and spring breathes new life into the soul of New York City, a visionary new artwork is taking shape in the heart of Brooklyn. The Hanging Gardens of Brooklyn will bring an ecologically inspired installation to a BK Public Park in the Summer of 2021. Visitors will gather beneath a trellised garden of edible vining plants and flowers and enjoy an immersive experience complete with environmentally responsive light and sound.
SITE
The project is currently under review by the NYC Parks Department, and with their support it will make its way to a public park in central Brooklyn. Proposed sites include Fort Greene Park, Prospect Park, Herbert Von King, Cadman Plaza, and more. Stay tuned for updates!
PROGRAMMING & EVENTS
Over the course of the installation, the pavilion will be host to a variety of and gatherings. We look forward to providing a space for the many diverse perspectives of Brooklyn to come together and cross pollinate.
Performance
NYC's Parks have always been hotspots for performing artists of many varieties. The installation will provide a unique space for expressions in music and movement and select special performances will even plug into the dynamic lighting and sound systems of the installation to create immersive sensory experiences.
Education
The space will also serve as an outdoor classroom for the local community. As a unique blend of art, ecology, and engineering, the installation can provide a setting to explore topics such as permaculture, engineering, urban farming, digital design/fabrication, environmental justice, and much more.
SUPPORT
The Hanging Gardens project has received the generous support of the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, administered by Brooklyn Arts Council. In March of 2021 Bryce Peterson received the honor of a Brooklyn Arts Fund grant, providing the initial seed funding to launch the project.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Bryce Peterson is an artist and engineer with ample experience in executing large scale interactive artworks. His specialty is in projects which integrate numerous complex systems, including digitally fabricated structures, interactive lighting and sound, and kinetic mechanical and fluid systems. Bryce holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland and has been pursuing his art practice for over 3 years in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. Bryce also works part time as a CNC Machinist at SITU Fabrication in Brooklyn.
In his artwork, Bryce has taken a multi-disciplinary approach to creating experiential artworks. His intent is to immerse participants in new worlds, transporting them to speculative environments in which new relationships between technology and ecology are explored. As his practice progresses, he looks forward to creating more deeply immersive spaces and engaging many others in the world-building experience of an imagined future.
HELP BRING THE HANGING GARDENS TO LIFE!
To fully realize the Hanging Gardens project this summer, Bryce needs your help to raise an additional $10,000 in funding for the installation. This money will go directly towards materials, fabrication costs, engineering, insurance, and other expenses necessary to install the artwork in Brooklyn’s public space. Anything helps and your donation will go a long way towards bringing this inspiring new artwork to our city!
