1/30/2020 RIP Hani

Hi all, thank you for visiting our page. On the night of Friday, September 20th, our dad, Hani Khouri, fell unconscious. He did not receive medical attention until the following morning, and did not receive a diagnosis until the day after that.

He had ischemic stroke to the brain stem likely due to an arrhythmia of the heart, causing a blood clot to be sent up to his brain. The brain stem is responsible for involuntary actions, like breathing, heartbeat, and consciousness. It's a miracle that he's alive as it is, but the damage from the stroke is still devastating.

He's been in the ICU for over two weeks now with only a day-to-day prognosis, and is still considered critically stable. He is able to breathe on his own for the most part, he can move around, but he cannot stay awake for long, he can't speak, he can't swallow or control the fluid in his throat. He has a tracheostomy and PEG feeding tube placed. We don't know if and when he will recover but we are hopeful-- we're seeing small steps every day. Those of you who know our dad know he's very strong.

Needless to say, this is a very difficult time for our family. Hani was the caretaker for our mom, Mary Lee, who herself suffers major neurological deficiencies after 3 brain tumors in the past few years and a coma of an undiagnosed cause most recently in July.

^ this was way before any of this

Our parents have been subsisting on very little as it is, neither able to have steady work due to their situation. Their house is in bad shape following Hurricane Irma and has major mold damage. It hasn't been suitable to live in as it is, let alone for Hani to come home to and receive care in. My brothers, Omar, Nicholas, Jad, and I, have become responsible for our parents suddenly, and we could use help with the expenses. These include:
- forthcoming medical bills
- legal help
- house repairs and improvements for livability
- yard work
- assistance for our mother

^ this is the black mold still around after replacing some parts of the ceiling. It's over the kitchen and living room, and in most of the bedrooms.
We know it's a lofty goal. Any bit helps. If you feel like you'd like to help but cannot contribute monetarily, we could use help in other ways. A home-cooked meal, running an errand with our mom because she cannot drive, keeping her company, being a listening ear, spending time at the hospital with Hani (which is very important for his recovery).

My brothers and I would like to express a deep gratitude to those of you who can help us out in these difficult times and help us shoulder the weight of these new responsibilities. I, Marguerite, personally appreciate any help. I'll be the only one here in Miami overseeing my parents' care, both of whom are in very delicate condition right now. I want to make sure they get what they need, and unfortunately I can't afford it all, so again, thank you.
