It's hard to believe that Maureen O'Brien has proudly served the fight against cancer through the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for over 21 years! With her retirement at the end of 2021, friends and members of the LLS community would like to honor her contributions with some retirement gifts that she loves and has the time to enjoy!

Some of the many reasons we'd like to honor Maureen's contributions:
Maureen joined the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in February of 1999 as the Upstate NY/VT Campaign Director for the Team in Training Sports Endurance Charity Fundraising Program. Her passion brought her around the country, from NYC to Anchorage, San Diego, Tucson, Chicago, Orlando, DC, Santa Fe, Lake Tahoe, Seattle and locally to Vermont, Schroon Lake and our beloved Lake Placid. Internationally she traveled to Dublin, Bermuda and London; always escorting our local participants to their destination event and helping to make sure they had a life-changing experience.
On average she brought individuals and teams to 8-10 TNT events per year. Eventually, she decided to ‘walk the talk’ and signed up for her first event, the Bermuda marathon. From there she became "hooked" and went on to complete 2 marathons and 10 half-marathons, raising over $50k personally. During her tenure with LLS, the chapter’s TNT program raised over $12m for cancer research and patient support programs.
Maureen also helped transition our chapter signature event, Heroes & Hope, to the Man & Woman of the Year campaign in 2009. Event revenue doubled, and since 2009 our chapter raised over $4.5m for this campaign. Since "Students of the Year" began 4 years ago, inspiring out future leaders to "give back", ~$700k has been raised! Under Maureen's tenure, the "Light the Night" community-based event honoring cancer patients has raised over $7.3m since 1999.
As Maureen heads into retirement, her work is part of an organization that has made a tremendous contribution to blood cancers (and to ALL cancers when considering how many LLS-funded treatments have multiple applications).
