Wat is Happy Sad Angry Scared?

Happy Sad Angry Scared is de eerste kortfilm die ik geschreven heb en mag regisseren. De laatste jaren heb ik vooral voor de camera gestaan, en daar geniet ik nog steeds van, maar al tijdens mijn Woordkunst-opleiding had ik het verlangen om een eigen verhaal in film te vertellen. Ik ben heel blij dat ik nu deze kans krijg.

Maar een film maken kan ik niet alleen, en ik ben heel blij met het getalenteerde team dat we hebben kunnen verzamelen om dit verhaal te vertellen. Zowel deze mensen als het technisch materiaal kosten geld. Daarom zoeken we naar mensen die willen investeren in deze korte film die hopelijk de voortzetting van een duurzame carrière betekent voor heel het team.

Hoe kan je investeren?

Vanaf 25 euro kan je een ticket kopen voor de exclusieve avant-première van de kortfilm. Heb je zin om meer te investeren, dan kan dat. Ook hogere bedragen zijn steeds welkom. De donaties kan je doen via deze GoFundMe pagina.

Wat krijg je ervoor terug?

In ruil voor jouw steun, ben je uitgenodigd op de exclusieve avant-première van de film. Je krijgt de kans om de film te zien in de beste kwaliteit, voor de rest van de wereld. We hopen je op die manier deel te kunnen maken van een unieke ervaring. Wanneer de avant-première exact plaatsvindt, kunnen we nog niet zeggen, maar je zal als eerste op de hoogte gesteld worden.

Wat is ons doel?

In aanloop van deze film hebben we geprobeerd om zo veel mogelijk geld in te zamelen via overheidsfonden. We zijn heel blij met de steun van het Vlaams Audiovisueel Fonds, maar dat is jammer genoeg niet voldoende om deze ambitieuze kortfilm te maken. Om onze kortfilm op een comfortabele manier te maken komen we 10.000 euro tekort. Dat lijkt veel geld, maar als je weet hoeveel mensen er meewerken aan een film, valt dat mee. We hebben een prachtig team verzameld en willen hen naar behoren kunnen betalen. Ook materiaal, locaties, kostuums, … zijn belangrijke facetten van een film waar heel wat geld naartoe gaat.

Waar gaat Happy Sad Angry Scared over?

In Happy Sad Angry Scared volgen we een dag lang de jeugdvrienden Laurens en Roman. De laatste jaren zijn ze uit elkaar gegroeid, maar een gemeenschappelijk verlies heeft hen weer samen gebracht. In een poging om met elkaars emoties om te leren gaan, trekken ze elkaars kleren aan en plaatsen zich letterlijk in de ander z’n schoenen. Hierdoor krijgen ze plots de mogelijkheid om dingen te vertellen over elkaar die ze daarvoor niet durfden zeggen. Ze proberen dit zo lang mogelijk vol te houden, tot hun eigen persoonlijkheid weer boven komt drijven en ze letterlijk uit hun rol vallen.

Waarom wil ik deze film maken?

Een hele tijd geleden was ik aan het wandelen door het Antwerps stadspark. Ik liep er voorbij een grote groep mensen, waarvan sommigen lachten en anderen huilden, andere leken boos of bang. Hoewel ik niemand van de mensen kende - ze hadden mijn leeftijd - was het voelbaar dat er iemand ontbrak. De groep was samen aan het rouwen.

Ik begon na te denken over hoe ik zou reageren op zo een verlies, hoe ik zou reageren op een vriend met een groot verdriet. En ik besefte dat ik dat niet wist, hoe dat moest, omgaan met rouw, of met een vriend in rouw. Uit het verlangen om hierover bij te leren, begon ik Happy Sad Angry Scared te schrijven.

In de absurde constellatie van twee jeugdvrienden die elkaar spelen, hoop ik iets te vertellen over hoe we als maatschappij (niet) omgaan met rouw, en hoe we elkaar daar beter bij kunnen helpen.

Dankzij het schrijven aan deze film heb ik veel geleerd over rouwen en over het verlangen van mensen om te spreken over wie of wat ze kwijt zijn. De film bracht boeiende gesprekken op gang met iedereen die erbij betrokken is, en ik hoop dat die gesprekken zich ook verder kunnen zetten bij iedereen die deze film ziet.

Hoe ziet de planning eruit?

Film is een werk van lange adem. De eerste versie van het scenario werd meer dan twee jaar geleden geschreven. Momenteel zijn we bezig met de laatste stappen in financiering en samenstellen van een team. We hebben al veel enthousiaste en getalenteerde mensen gevonden, en de ploeg is bijna rond. De opnames zelf zullen tussen 10 en 14 mei plaatsvinden. Snel erna beginnen we aan de beeldmontage. Daarna komen geluidsmontage en muziek erbij. Zodra dat klaar is, zullen we de film opsturen naar filmfestivals. Voor die in première gaat op een festival, willen we de film delen met de mensen die de film gesteund hebben.

What is Happy Sad Angry Scared?

Happy Sad Angry Scared is the first short film I've written and will direct. Over the past few years, I've mainly been in front of the camera, which I still enjoy, but during my studies, I had the desire to tell my own story through film. I'm very grateful for this opportunity. However, making a film is not something I can do alone, and I'm thrilled with the talented team we've assembled to tell this story. Both these people and the technical equipment cost money. That's why we're looking for people who want to invest in this short film, which hopefully marks the continuing of a sustainable career for the whole team.

How can you invest?

You can buy a ticket for the exclusive premiere of the short film starting from 25 euros. If you're interested in investing more, that's also welcome. Higher amounts are always appreciated. You can make donations through this GoFundMe page.

What is our goal?

Leading up to this film, we've tried to raise as much money as possible through government funds. We're very grateful for the support of the Flanders Audiovisual Fund, but unfortunately, it's not enough to make this ambitious short film. To comfortably make our short film, we're short of 10,000 euros. That may seem like a lot of money, but considering how many people work on a film, it's manageable. We've assembled a wonderful team and want to pay them properly. Equipment, locations, costumes, and so on are also significant aspects of a film that require a substantial amount of money.

What is Happy Sad Angry Scared about?

Happy Sad Angry Scared follows childhood friends Laurens and Roman throughout a day. Over the years, they've drifted apart, but a common loss has brought them back together. In an attempt to deal with each other's emotions, they swap clothes and literally step into each other's shoes. This gives them the chance to reveal things about each other they hadn't dared to say before. They try to maintain this for as long as possible until their own personalities resurface, and they literally fall out of character.

Why do I want to make this film?

A while ago, I was walking through Antwerp city park. I passed by a large group of people, some laughing, some crying, some looking angry or scared. Even though I didn't know any of these people – they were around my age – it was palpable that someone was missing. The group was mourning together. I began to think about how I would react to such a loss, how I would react to a friend experiencing profound sorrow. And I realized I didn't know, how to deal with grief or with a grieving friend. Out of the desire to learn more about this, I started writing Happy Sad Angry Scared. In the absurd scenario of two childhood friends impersonating each other, I hope to say something about how we as a society deal (or fail to deal) with grief and how we can better support each other. Writing this film taught me a lot about grieving and about people's desire to talk about who or what they've lost. The film sparked engaging conversations with everyone involved, and I hope those conversations can continue with everyone who sees this film.

What is the schedule?

Filmmaking is a long process. The first version of the script was written over two years ago. Currently, we're in the final stages of financing and assembling a team. We've already found many enthusiastic and talented individuals, and the team is nearly complete. The actual shooting will take place between May 10th and May 14th. Shortly after, we'll start with the editing. Then sound editing and music will be added. Once that's done, we'll submit the film to film festivals. Before it premieres at a festival, we want to share the film with those who have supported it.
