Harbor Island Rookery Restoration Project
Spende geschützt
Harbor Island is a beach community located in the Lowcountry area of South Carolina. A diversity of habitats allows Harbor Island to provide a home to a wide array of wildlife. Among these varied wildlife habitats on the island are four rookeries with freshwater lagoons that provide permanent & seasonal homes to numerous types of egrets, herons, ibises, and other bird species. In addition to birds, turtles and alligators are also regular visitors to these rookeries.
Recently, a combination of high winds, storms, and king tides caused a significant breach in one of Harbor Island’s rookery lagoons. If neglected, the impact of this breach will be devastating for a substantial portion of wildlife on Harbor Island. Over time, the influx of saltwater will transform the lagoon into a saltwater tidal basin, causing a portion of the island’s bird population, both seasonal and permanent, to leave for new nesting areas.
The process of repairing this breach needs to be completed in the near future. We are asking for donations in an effort to meet a fundraising goal of $9,000. These donations will assist in reducing repair costs and also ensure that both our permanent and seasonal birds continue to call Harbor Island home.
As one of the National Audubon Society’s designated Important Bird Areas, the Harbor Island community is dedicated to conservation efforts that identify, monitor, and protect all bird species that inhabit our island.
All contributions will help restore, sustain, and ensure the future of this habitat for wading birds and other wildlife. Thank you for your support!
This donation page was set up to assist in covering repair costs for homeowners on Sand Dollar Ct.and Tradewind Ln., who share one of Harbor Island's four rookeries. One of these street's homeowners, Pat Murphy, has opened a bank account specifically for these funds that will be attached to this GoFundMe page.
Donations will be used to help pay local contractors to remove debris (fallen trees, limbs, & other obstructions), repair the breach, ]fortify the lagoon with sand and riprap, and help in paying labor costs.
