Story
Harewa/Lele Elementary school with a student population of 1500 is located between Kobo and Deder towns in East Harargae zone in Ethiopia. It is about 320 miles from Addis Ababa, the capital city. The school is I among the communities with a severe water problem. The closest water stream to the school is about 2 miles away and it is contaminated. There is no water in the school compound and when the younger ones feel thirsty, they had to wonder during break or class time to get water, losing valuable class time. Year round, most often female students fetch water from distant sources. This causes being absent or late for regular school. Eighty percent of illnesses are linked to poor water and sanitation conditions in Africa. (https://thewaterproject.org) .

Another problem the school is facing is functional classrooms and necessary supplies. The school buildings are old and falling apart. (Please see photo). During the rainy seasons, the rooms are flooded. There are no desks, blackboards, electricity, library, or computers. The fundamental bases of livelihood in rural Harewa comes from small scale farming which is generally subsistent farming. Most of the students attending the school come from peasant background lacking adequate nutrition, personal hygiene and immunizations.

Their parents mainly make their livelihood by tilling and herding. Mixed agriculture has been dominant economic activity. Agriculture has remained more or less static for centuries and people have been indifferent to material wealth. Little has been done to transform peasant agriculture of the country. The failure and static nature of the Ethiopian peasant agriculture could be associated with interlinked historical, natural, religious and cultural factors. (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.aasci.2017.04.002).
