Hello friends and friends of friends,
In case you don't know me personally, my name is Heather. I have created this fundraiser for my long-time friend and new fellow Canadian, Haris. Haris and I met back in 2013 when I first moved to the UAE. He was one of my first friends here and our lives overlapped for many years before he relocated back to Afghanistan not long prior to the recent Taliban takeover. Haris is a caring, generous, determined and admirably hardworking person who has endured more than most of us can even imagine, and who is, unfortunately, continuing to meet challenge after challenge despite finally being on safe soil.
Haris, his wife, and their children arrived in Moncton, New Brunswick, as an Afghan refugees in late October of last year. Two of his brothers later managed to join them. Many more family members who are due to come to Canada are still trapped in Afghanistan. He arrived in Canada ready and eager to start his new life, work hard, and contribute valuably to Canadian society. He has since applied for over 500 positions via Indeed and handed out hundreds of resumes in person. He and his brothers are willing to do any type of work available. Despite all of his efforts, he and his brothers have been unable to get any consistent work. With only the odd cleaning job, they are barely able to make basic expenses and have at points had to rely on the food bank to eat. Although he is extraordinarily appreciative of the financial support the Canadian government is providing, it doesn't even quite cover the rent for the old 3-bedroom house the 4 adults and 3 children are living in. What could help to turn this all around? A car.
Delivery driving jobs are a great option for new immigrants, but you need to supply your own car. If Haris had a car, he would finally have an avenue of income and the opportunity he needs to at long last build the life he dreams of for him and his family. Please help me give Haris and his family this very deserved and desperately needed leg up. The amount of $15,000 would buy a reliable used car ($12-13,000 for a 2014 or 2015 Toyota Corolla from a dealership), pay for insurance (approx. $500), cover the costs of he and his brothers bussing to and from Fredricton and taking the tests required to have Canadian drivers licenses (approx. $800 for the three off them - they will soon not be allowed to drive on their original licenses), and buy a few tanks of gas to get things started.
Any amount you're able to contribute, big or small, would be so greatly appreciated and make a remarkably significant difference in the lives of Haris and his family.
*Since the above was written by the original creator of this fundraiser, the ownership of this fundraiser has been transferred to the beneficiary. This has been done due to legalities related to organizing/promoting charity in the country that the original creator resides. Please rest assured, nothing suspicious or underhanded is at play. The fundraiser remains legitimate and all donations are very much appreciated and will go to good use.
